Choosing Your Product: Stain & Sealer vs. Penetrating Stain

Unsure whether to select the TimberSoy™ Polyurethane Wood Stain & Sealer or the standard TimberSoy™ Penetrating Wood Stain? Choose this Stain & Sealer combo if your project requires any of the following:

  • One-Step Convenience: Select this product if you want to apply your color and high-performance topcoat simultaneously. Traditional penetrating stains only add color and require a separate clear coat to seal the wood. However, 2-coats are recommended so there may not be time savings other than you are able to apply your 2nd coat as soon as the base coat is dry usually within an hour. 

  • Previously Finished Surfaces: Unlike standard penetrating stains that require raw, completely bare wood to absorb properly, this polyurethane hybrid features outstanding bonding strength that allows it to adhere seamlessly to previously stained or lightly painted wood. If you have an unfinished wood, the most durable system is when you separate the color from the sealer. 

  • Color Sealer Enhancement: Use the stain and sealer if your applied the penetrating sealer, but require a darker color tone or have a wood stained surface that is blotchy and requires correction. The ability to build thin film color often is the solution rather than stripping and restaining.

TimberSoy™ Polyurethane Wood Stain & Sealer: Application Guide

Please read all instructions carefully before beginning your project. Proper surface preparation is the single most important factor in achieving an industrial-grade, long-lasting finish.

1. Advanced Surface Preparation

  • Bare/Unfinished Wood: Sand the surface in the direction of the wood grain using 150 to 180-grit sandpaper. Remove all sanding dust thoroughly with a vacuum and a clean, lint-free damp cloth. Allow to dry completely.
  • Previously Finished Wood: This polyurethane hybrid features outstanding bonding strength and can be applied over old stains or light coatings. However, the surface must be clean, dry, and free of wax, grease, or oil. Lightly scuff-sand old glossy finishes with 220-grit sandpaper to optimize mechanical adhesion.
  • The "Splash Test" (For Exterior/Decks): Before application, sprinkle water onto a few areas of the wood. If the water beads up, an old sealer is still active and must be lightly sanded or stripped. If the water absorbs rapidly and darkens the wood within 5 seconds, the surface is porous and ready for treatment.

2. Required Tools & Equipment

  • Brushes: High-quality synthetic nylon/polyester blend bristle brush.
  • Pads: Paint trim pad, wood block applicator with foam pad, microfiber mop.
  • Rollers: Short-nap (1/4" to 3/8") microfiber roller or premium foam roller.
  • Sprayers: HVLP or airless sprayer (use a fine finish tip; do not over-thin).
  • Mixing: Clean stir sticks (do not shake excessively to avoid creating micro-bubbles).

3. Step-by-Step Application Process

Pro Tip: Always perform a small test patch in an inconspicuous area to verify color accuracy, absorption rate, and personal technique before tackling the main project.

  • Step 1: Mix Thoroughly: Stir the product completely from the bottom up to redistribute any settled pigments. Do not shake. Shaking introduces air bubbles that can become trapped in the film finish.
  • Step 2: Maintain a Wet Edge: Apply a thin, even coat following the direction of the natural wood grain. Work on one or two boards at a time from end to end to avoid lap marks and maintain a "wet edge." Do not roll on like paint. Its best to work the stain into the fibers similar to a penetrating stain.
  • Step 3: Control Film Thickness: Do not allow the product to puddle or accumulate in deep cracks or crevices. Wipe away any heavy excesses immediately with your brush or roller.
  • Step 4: Allow to Dry (30–60 Mins): TimberSoy™ dries quickly. Let the first coat dry to the touch (typically 30 to 60 minutes, depending on local humidity and temperature) before proceeding.
  • Step 5: Apply Second Coat: A minimum of two coats is highly recommended to achieve optimal color depth, uniform sheen, and maximum film protection.

4. Technical Application Parameters

  • Coverage Rate: 300 - 400 SqFt per Gallon per coat (highly dependent on wood porosity and application method).
  • Dry Time (To Touch): 30 Minutes to 1 Hour.
  • Recoat Window: Can be recoated as soon as the base coat is dry to the touch (usually within 1 hour).
  • Full Chemical Cure: 7 Days. Avoid heavy foot traffic, dragging furniture, or exposing the surface to standing water/harsh cleaners during this curing window.
  • Cleanup: Clean all brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately after use with warm, soapy water. Do not let the product dry on your tools.

Important System Recommendations

  • For Raw/Unfinished Wood (Maximum Durability): If you are working with entirely unfinished, raw lumber, the most durable system is achieved by separating your color from your sealer. Apply a dedicated standard penetrating stain first for deep fiber coloration, and then lock it in with a dedicated clear topcoat (such as EcoPoly Sealer and Finish or Eco-Tuff Clear Coat).
  • For Color Adjustments & Touch-Ups: If you have already applied a penetrating stain but find the color tone uneven, blotchy, or too light, the TimberSoy™ Polyurethane Wood Stain & Sealer is the perfect solution. Its thin-film tinting capabilities allow you to adjust tones and correct inconsistencies smoothly without stripping the wood back to bare timber.
