Eco-Tuff™ Bio-Polyurethane Clear Coating — Application Guide

1. Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential to achieve maximum adhesion, clarity, and durability. Substrates must be structural, clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, wax, dirt, curing compounds, efflorescence, and loose material.

  • Concrete Substrates: Ensure concrete is fully cured (minimum 28 days).Surface profile should ideally meet ICRI CSP 1 to CSP 2. Acid etch using an eco-friendly etcher (such as Eco-Etch Pro) or mechanically grind/abrade the surface.Thoroughly neutralize, rinse, and allow to dry completely (<4% moisture content).
  • Wood & Millwork Substrates: Sand wood surfaces with 120–180 grit sandpaper along the grain. Vacuum all dust completely and wipe with a tack cloth or lint-free microfiber rag. Ensure moisture content of the wood is below 12%.
  • Coated / Stained Surfaces: Ensure underlying penetrating stains or primers are fully cured per manufacturer guidelines before applying clear topcoats. Lightly scuff-sand topical coatings or previously sealed smooth surfaces with 220-grit paper to promote mechanical adhesion.

2. Environmental & Application Conditions

  • Ambient & Substrate Temperature: 50∘F to 90∘F (10∘C to 32∘C).
  • Relative Humidity: Apply when relative humidity is below 85%.
  • Dew Point: Substrate temperature must be at least 5∘F above the dew point to prevent condensation during application and curing.
  • Ventilation: Good airflow accelerates drying times. Avoid direct heavy sun or extreme high-wind exterior applications to prevent premature skinning.

3. Mixing & Handling

  • Single-Component System: No hazardous 2K crosslinkers or complex mixing ratios required.
  • Agitation: Gently stir the container thoroughly before use to ensure uniform matting agent distribution (especially for Matte and Satin sheens).
  • Do Not Whip: Avoid high-speed agitation or excessive whipping to prevent air entrapment and foam creation.
  • Thinning: Do not thin. Eco-Tuff™ is ready to use directly from the container.

4. Application Methods

A. Airless Spray (Recommended for High-Volume / Commercial Projects)

  • Tip Size: .011" to .013" (e.g., 411, 511, or Fine Finish Low Pressure FF LP tips).
  • Pressure: 1,200 to 1,800 PSI (adjust for full atomization without tailing).
  • Technique: Maintain a consistent 10–12 inch distance from the surface. Apply in uniform overlapping passes (50% overlap). Avoid heavy puddles.

B. Microfiber Roller & Applicator Bar (Flooring Contractors)

  • Equipment: 3/8-inch nap short-pile microfiber roller, synthetic floor coater pad, or T-bar applicator.
  • Technique: Apply evenly maintaining a wet edge. Do not over-roll or force product back and forth once it begins to tack, as this can trap micro-bubbles.

C. HVLP / Factory OEM Spray Line

  • Tip Size: .007" to .009" orifice / fine finish setup.
  • Air Pressure: Adjust fluid flow and air caps to achieve fine atomization on flat architectural panels or pre-finished wood assemblies.

5. Recommended Film Thickness & Coverage

Theoretical Coverage: 350 – 450 sq. ft. per gallon / coat
Wet Film Thickness (WFT): 3.5 – 4.5 mils per coat
Dry Film Thickness (DFT): 1.2 – 1.6 mils per coat
Recommended Total Coats: 2 Coats minimum (Self-sealing; no separate primer required for most applications)

6. Drying & Recoat Schedule

(Based on standard conditions: 70∘F / 21∘C and 50% Relative Humidity)

  • Dry to Touch: 30 – 60 minutes
  • Recoat Window: 60 minutes (once dry to touch). If recoating after 24 hours, lightly scuff-sand with a 220-grit screen/pad to ensure optimal inter-coat adhesion.
  • Light Foot Traffic: 8 – 12 hours
  • Commercial / Heavy Foot Traffic: 24 – 48 hours
  • Full Chemical & Moisture Cure: 72 hours

7. Clean-Up & Maintenance

  • Clean-Up: Clean all spray equipment, rollers, tools, and spills immediately with warm water and mild liquid soap. Do not allow product to dry in spray lines or tips.
  • Routine Maintenance: Clean cured floors using neutral pH cleaners. Avoid harsh abrasive pads, highly alkaline, or solvent-based strippers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How does Eco-Tuff™ compare to traditional two-part epoxies and solvent-based polyurethanes in commercial high-traffic areas?

A: Eco-Tuff™ provides equivalent or superior abrasion, chemical, and hot-tire resistance compared to standard 2k epoxies, but without toxic solvent fumes, ambering/yellowing, or hazardous off-gassing. Because it is a single-component bio-polyurethane hybrid, it eliminates pot-life limitations, reduces waste, and allows for much faster recoat windows.

Q: Does Eco-Tuff™ clear coating meet LEED, WELL, and Green Globes compliance standards for sustainable building projects?

A: Yes. Eco-Tuff™ is formulated with zero VOCs (0 g/L) and zero hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). It meets or exceeds requirements for LEED v4/v4.1 (Low-Emitting Materials credit), WELL Building Standard, Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List Free criteria, and Green Globes, making it ideal for healthcare, education, and commercial green building specifications.

Q: Can this coating be applied directly over both concrete and wood flooring substrates without a separate primer?

A: Yes, Eco-Tuff™ is a self-sealing, highly versatile formulation that adheres directly to properly prepared concrete, interior/exterior wood, decorative concrete stains, terrazzo, and architectural panels. For heavily porous concrete or specialty wood applications, using a dedicated primer like Eco-Tuff Quick Prime can further optimize coverage rates and adhesion.

Q: What is the dry and recoat time, and when can a commercial floor be returned to full service?

A: At standard conditions (70°F / 50% RH), Eco-Tuff™ dries to the touch and can be recoated in about 60 minutes. Light foot traffic can resume after 8–12 hours, while heavy commercial traffic and full chemical/moisture cure are achieved within 48 to 72 hours.

Q: What application methods are recommended for large-scale job sites or factory OEM production lines?

A: For maximum speed and uniform coverage on large projects, airless spraying is recommended using a .011 to .012 tip size. High-Volume Low-Pressure (HVLP) sprayers .007 - .009, microfiber rollers, or foam applicators can also be used for smaller contractor jobs or detailed architectural millwork.

Q: Is Eco-Tuff™ breathable, and will it prevent moisture-related blistering on exterior or ground-slab concrete?

A: Yes. Eco-Tuff™ forms a vapor-permeable (breathable) film that allows moisture vapor from the substrate to escape while providing a completely water-impermeable barrier on top. This prevents the bubbling, cracking, or delamination commonly seen with non-breathable clear coats under hydrostatic pressure.

Q: Are custom bulk packaging sizes, OEM private labeling, and job-site direct freight available?

A: Absolutely. In addition to standard 1-Gallon and 5-Gallon pails, we offer 55-Gallon drums as well as 275-Gallon and 330-Gallon IBC bulk totes for factory OEM lines and high-volume commercial projects. Custom formulations, private labeling, and job-site direct freight options are available upon request.
