TimberSoy Penetrating Wood Stain Application Guide

Important Prerequisites
  • Weather Conditions: Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F. Avoid applying in direct, intense sunlight or if rain is expected within 24 hours for exterior projects.
  • Substrate Check: Wood must be completely bare, structurally sound, dry (moisture content below 15%), and free of all previous coatings, sealers, wax, grease, and mill glaze.
Step 1: Surface Preparation
  1. Strip & Clean: If the wood was previously coated, completely remove the old finish using an eco-friendly stripper (EcoFast 100 Gel or EnviroGel) or thorough mechanical sanding. Clean dirt and gray weathered fibers using a safe wood cleaner or brightener. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
  2. Sanding: Sand the surface uniformly in the direction of the wood grain. For furniture, cabinetry, or interior floors: Finish with 120-grit to 150-grit sandpaper. For rough-sawn exterior siding or fences: Light sanding or power washing is usually sufficient.Crucial Note: Avoid sanding with ultra-fine grits (220+), as this will burnish the wood surface, close up the pores, and prevent proper penetration.
  3. Dust Removal: Thoroughly vacuum all residual sawdust and wipe down the surface with a lint-free micro-fiber cloth.
Step 2: Conditioning (For Blotch-Prone Woods Only)

If you are working with soft or tightly grained wood species known to stain unevenly (such as pine, maple, birch, cherry, or fir):

  • Apply a uniform washcoat of a compatible water-borne pre-stain wood conditioner. (Tip: A 50/50 dilution of Acri-Soy Penetrating Sealer with clean water works exceptionally well to stabilize porosity).
  • Allow the conditioner to dry completely, then scuff-sanded lightly in the direction of the grain before proceeding to stain.
Step 3: Stain Application

Always test the stain color on a small, inconspicuous area or sample scrap of the exact same wood species prior to starting the full project.

  1. Agitation: Stir TimberSoy thoroughly from the bottom of the container before and periodically during use to ensure the factory-tint pigments remain completely suspended.
  2. Application Tools: You can apply TimberSoy using a high-quality nylon/polyester brush, stain pad, foam paint trim pad, wood block with applicator pad, HVLP sprayer, or an airless sprayer with fine tip.
  3. Technique:Work Wet-Edge to Wet-Edge: Work down the entire length of 2 to 3 boards at a time to prevent lap marks. Work the stain into the wood fibers. Never roll or leave a surface film. Treat this like a wiping stain where you remove topical residue. Many professionals will use a floor buffer with red pad to spread and push the stain into the fibers. Never stop in the middle of a board. Sprayer Method: If using an airless sprayer, it is highly recommended to immediately follow behind with a brush or applicator pad (back-brushing/back-wiping) to force the stain uniformly into the wood pores and even out the distribution. This may not be necessary if using an HVLP sprayer method with is a highly controlled mist spray that can quickly absorb without surface film.
  4. Wipe Excess: Allow the stain to penetrate the wood fibers for several minutes. If any unabsorbed stain begins to pool or sit topically on the surface, immediately wipe it away with a clean, lint-free rag. TimberSoy is a penetrating formula and should not form a thick film layer on top of the wood.
Step 4: Dry Time & Additional Coats
  • Dry Time: Under standard conditions (77°F and 50% relative humidity), TimberSoy will dry to the touch in 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Recoat Window: If a deeper color profile or greater uniformity is desired, a second coat can be applied as soon as the first coat is completely dry (typically after 1 to 2 hours). This is only possible if the wood has enough porosity to take more stain. If you desire the darkest color possible, you may also apply what is often called "flood and wipe". By controlling the dwell time, you allow a heavy coat to pool on the surface to allow the pigments and resins to penetrate as deeply as the wood's natural porosity allows before the unabsorbed excess is wiped clean.
Step 5: Sealing & Topcoating (High-Wear Surfaces)

While TimberSoy provides integral bio-based protection, high-use or high-exposure surfaces benefit greatly from a protective topcoat.

  • Interior Floors, Cabinets & Furniture: Wait at least 6 to 24 hours for the stain to fully dry, then apply 2 to 3 thin coats of a durable clear finish (such as Eco-Tuff Clear Polyurethane) to shield against mechanical wear, water ring marks, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Exterior Decks & Fences: Applying Acri-Soy Penetrating Sealer is optional but will significantly maximize color retention, water repellency and longevity against high UV exposure. If you require a sheen other than matte or need enhanced surface barrier, you may find our EcoPoly Polyurethane Sealer & Finish an excellent choice.
Clean-Up

Because TimberSoy is a advanced bio-based, zero-VOC hybrid emulsion, clean-up is incredibly straightforward. Simply wash all tools and brushes immediately after use with warm, soapy water.

TimberSoy Wood Stain Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can TimberSoy be applied over an old stain or paint? A: No. TimberSoy is a penetrating, semi-transparent stain that needs to bond directly to raw wood fibers. If there is an existing film-like barrier, paint, or old sealer, it will prevent the stain from absorbing. The surface must be stripped, sanded back to bare wood, and cleared of dust and oils before application.

Q: How should I prepare the wood before staining? A: Sand the wood uniformly in the direction of the grain. For most interior furniture or floors, finishing with 120 to 150-grit sandpaper is ideal. Avoid over-sanding with ultra-fine grits (220+), as this can "burnish" or close the wood pores. Clean the surface thoroughly to ensure it is free of dust, grease, and mill glaze.

Q: What is the best way to apply TimberSoy to avoid lap marks? A: TimberSoy offers excellent, lap-free flow. It can be applied using a high-quality nylon/polyester brush, microfiber applicator pads, or an airless sprayer. The key is to work wet-edge to wet-edge along the entire length of the boards. If spraying, back-wiping or back-brushing is recommended to ensure even penetration.

Q: How do I prevent blotching or uneven staining on woods like pine, maple, oak, or birch? A: To ensure a uniform finish, it is essential to control the wood’s porosity before applying the stain. We recommend applying a high-quality, water-borne pre-stain wood conditioner or a thin washcoat, which seals the softer, highly absorbent pockets of the wood. Many contractors will dilute our Acri-Soy Penetrating Sealer with 50% water and apply to wood surfaces susceptible to blotching. Additionally, ensure your final sanding is done with 120 to 150-grit sandpaper; avoid over-sanding with higher grits (220+), as this can "burnish" the wood and prevent the stain from penetrating evenly.

Q: How many coats do I need, and what is the dry time? A: Typically, 1 to 2 coats are sufficient depending on the desired color depth and the porosity of the wood. This is not a topcoat film stain and amount of stain is dependent on how much stain the wood will absorb. Be sure to use proper installation methods and tools to prevent topical residue. TimberSoy is engineered for a rapid dry time of 30 minutes to 1 hour under normal conditions 77F @ 50% relative humidity.

Q: Will this stain shield wood from UV fading on outdoor decks or fences? A: Yes. The factory-tinted versions utilize premium colorfast pigment dispersions that offer excellent UV resistance. For maximum longevity on high-exposure exterior applications, selecting the Infrared Reflective pigment type.

Q: Does TimberSoy require a clear sealer? A: While TimberSoy provides excellent integral protection, a topcoat is highly recommended for high-wear areas or where you desire moisture repellency. For interior floors and cabinets, apply a durable bio-based polyurethane non-toxic clear topcoat (such as Eco-Tuff) to protect against heavy foot traffic and household chemicals. For a natural matte penetrating non film forming sealant, choose Acri-Soy Penetrating Sealer. For vertical exterior surfaces, a topcoat is optional.

Q: Is it safe to use indoors around kids and pets? A: Absolutely. TimberSoy is a zero-VOC, (VOC Emissions Certified for office/classroom), virtually odorless, and non-toxic formula. It eliminates harmful off-gassing and combustion risks, making it perfectly safe for interior residential projects, nurseries, and commercial spaces.
